Gabriel is the counterpart of Michael who's icon is on the north
door. Being one of the seven archangels, he guards the southern entrance
to the sancuary.
Gabriel is first mentioned in the Old Testament book of Daniel,
but he comes into greater prominence in the New Testament, where he announces
the birth of John the Baptist to Zacharias, the priest, and later annouces
to the Virgin Mary her conception of Christ. The symbol of the lilies represent
a delivery of a message.
